A Generous Life

When we felt lead to move to Virginia so that Nathan could attend law school, we began a new journey of Faith. We prayed and asked God if I should get a job to sustain us during this time.  We only heard that I was to homeschool our kids. God clearly wanted us to Trust him.

In my fears I have found myself frequently asking Him the same question every month or so.  God, should I get a job of some sort? The answer placed in my heart is always the same.  Trust me.

Recently I was pondering the fact that we had just received a small student loan check that isn’t enough to last more than a few months.  And my questions to the Lord began again, God, do I need to get a job or do something to supplement our income?

I felt as if I was my own daughter whom loves to repetitively ask me the same question over and over, usually hoping for a different answer.

A short while after I was listening to worship music on the radio, when randomly a scripture popped in my head. Generally when this happens, I know that Holy Spirit is trying to speak something to me.  So I paid attention.

He reminded me of the Bible study I did a few years back by Priscilla Shirer, called Elijah. I immediately played the entire story in my head from 1 Kings 17.

It’s the story you might know of Elijah and the poor widow.  If you’re not familiar, let me catch you up.  God sent Elijah to a town named Zaraphath, and he told him that He has directed a woman there to supply him with food. He arrives and asks the woman first for some water, and later for some bread. She replies that she doesn’t have any bread, but does have enough flour and oil to make one last meal for she and her son before they will surely die. Elijah responds by telling her not to be afraid and asks her to first make bread for him, and then for she and her son. He then prophecies that the jar of flour and jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.  She then went away and did as Elijah told her. There was bread for she, her son, and Elijah daily. The jar of flour and the jug of oil did not run dry.

I then heard so clearly in my heart, “Take care of those in need and I will take care of you”.

My thoughts turned to the small student loan that we had received for this semester.  With everything inside of me, I knew that I knew that God was asking us to trust Him once again.  He is asking us to take care of those in need by giving a special offering, and to have faith that he will take care of us.

Did you know that there is even a scripture that speaks to this?

Proverbs 19:17 Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Repay.  The scripture reads that the person whom is generous to the poor will be repaid.

I immediately texted Nathan and told him the conversations and prayers I had with the Lord, and that I felt that we are supposed to give an offering. I prayed and asked God to give Nathan peace about this if it was truly something Holy Spirit was nudging us to do.

After I got home and spoke with Nathan, we began to discuss the scriptures and the events of my car ride.  He then told me that he had been wrestling with God over giving an offering on the loan, as we really need the money and are already tithing off of our VRBO income. As he wrestled with the thoughts it occurred to him that we should have $ in our safe and he had not seen it. Holy Spirit placed a memory in his head that we have a second safe and that he should check there.

Do you want to know what he found in that safe?  The EXACT dollar amount that we had just agreed to give as an offering.

Proverbs 19:17 Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.
